Product Information

The Super Zero. Called "...not just great for the money, but great period." ;and hailed as "a $250 speaker that compares with high-end speakers costing $3000…" by Corey Greenberg in the January 1994 issue of Stereophile, the Super Zero established NHT as a force in the world of high-value, high-performance audio. And now it's back.

The new NHT SuperZero 2.0 is a true-high end mini-monitor that builds on the merits of it's predecessor and dare we say, improves upon them. Transparency, detail, "walk-around the stage" realism, it's all there, and so much more. At just 9" tall x 5" wide x 5.5" deep the SuperZero 2.0 is small. Really small. Unlike most small speakers, which try to fool you with boomy, pseudo-bass from a port, the Super Zero 2.0's acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure skips the bass and focuses on making beautiful, lifelike midrange and high frequencies. Just like the original.

Magic Box - Build quality is stunning too. The compact, well-braced cabinet is naturally strong and stout. Stronger than larger boxes. As a result, it doesn’t have the to deal with the box vibrations that interfere with the critical midrange performance of its big-boy counterparts. The speaker's narrow front face is almost all speaker, so there's no wide baffle to interfere and interact with the Super Zero 2.0's output.

Better - No mere re-make, the SuperZero 2.0 makes some subtle improvements to the original Super Zero design. Specifically, we found that if we added an itsy-bitsy coil of wire to the crossover in just the right place we could make the tweeter roll off a bit faster (12dB/oct), effectively blocking more of the bass that tries to sneak into the tweeter without negatively impacting its response. This small crossover change significantly lowers the tweeter's distortion, improves power handling, and makes the lil’ bugger sound even better than the original.In-Side – The SuperZero sports a 4.5” long throw pulp cone woofer and a 1” silk dome tweeter. As mentioned above it features a 2nd order crossover (12 dB/octave) for both the midrange and tweeter.

OutSide – The SuperZero is finished in a beautiful black gloss laminate. Its grill is removable for those moments when you want to light candles and listen at the apex. The speaker can be easily wall or ceiling mounted using a Omnimount 10.0 bracket screwed into its 1/4"-20 threaded back panel insert. It also features real big boy ½ 5-way metal on metal binding posts that can accept bare wire, BFA’s, spades or ole’ fashioned ‘banana plugs – singles or duals We also offer a range of speaker stands and other complements to the SuperZero 2.0.

Awesome Bargain!

Just got home from a drive to Benicia, picked up the first publicly released SuperZero 2.0's from Chris and Dave. Could not wait to hear them at home!I never did hear the original SuperZero but last week did hear the original Zero (same cabinets) and I own a pair of Absolute Zeros, so comparisons with the latter were irresistable.Opening the box I note that while they are not as deep as the Absolute Zeros they are only about 1/2" narrower and likley an inch shorter. They may be a tad larger than the original SuperZero cabinets.Hooking them up, I listened to them with an old NHT SW2 sub driven by an SA-2 subwoofer amp. The SuperZero 2.0's are driven by an OnixMelody SPII integrated amp with the original tubes (will sound better after tube rolling the preamp tubes). At 38 watts/channel not sure this is ideal but probably fine for my normal listening levels. Source is a Craigslist acquired Marantz CC4000 OSE ($20!). Speaker cable is Home Depot 14 ga "speaker wire", interconnects are ancient top of the line Monster Cable.Playing Tracy Chapman "Telling Stories", Fine Young Cannibals "The Raw and the Cooked" and Earl Klugh "Finger Paintings, I am loving these little gems. Swapping cables between the Absolute Zerosand the SuperZero 2.0's I notice the absolute Zeros throw a bigger sound stage and perhaps warmer sound. Swapping back to the SuperZero's though, the sound is "cleaner" and better detailed, probably more neutral. Note toothat the SuperZeros are fresh out the box with 20 minutes on them, the Absolute Zeros have 6 months and beaucoup hours, so if you believe in "burn-in" these SuperZeros will only sound better with use. Note too that you will likely never want to use these without a subwoofer!Being curious, I would love to compare these with the original SuperZero, then swap the "new crossover" into the originals after that. However they may stack up with the originals, these SuperZero 2.0's are a steal! They remain in my second 2-channel system and my Absolute Zeros will migrate to become rear surrounds in my forthcoming AV system (with Classic 3's). $99 each, hell plastic "high end" PC speakers cost that much!
