Product Information

The NHT Classic Four is a formidable tower style loudspeaker. While the Classic Four looks like a tower, it is really a three-way bookshelf speaker (the Classic Three) sitting on it's own, integrated subwoofer stand.  This design provides the detailed imaging, delicious midrange and natural sound-staging of a fine bookshelf speaker with the bass and dynamics you'd expect from a first class tower speaker.  Provided you use a quality receiver or amplifier, the Four can fill a medium to large room with ease with rich, full-range sound.  The Classic Four is perfectly at home in a high-quality home theater or in a carefully configured reference music playback system.

Acoustic Suspension Hybrid:  The Classic Four is an acoustic suspension design where it really counts - in the critical midrange frequencies. In this section of the speaker, we use the trapped air (natures most perfect spring) in the upper chamber to control and damp the mid-woofer cone motion. This ensures the Classic Four delivers smooth, natural midrange with low distortion and high power handling. This sealed upper section blends perfectly with the built-in, acoustically isolated, side mounted 10" subwoofer that provides usable in-room bass response to a remarkable 24Hz.  This hybrid design allows the speaker to deliver the accurate midrange sonics you'd expect from a high end monitor speaker with the bass and dynamics that a larger floor standing speaker can provide. In addition, the subwoofer section may be bi-amplified for even more spectacular results.

Four-Way: The Classic Four is a 4-way design (unusual as most tower speakers in this price range are 3-way) using a custom designed 10" aluminum cone subwoofer which is mounted on the lower side of the cabinet, on a wide baffle - an acoustic environment well suited for low frequencies.  The mid and high-frequency drivers are located in their proper acoustical environment as well - on the narrow front baffle.  The driver complement starts with a  6.5” anodized aluminum cone "lower" midrange driver set in a low resonance BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound) frame.  The "upper" midrange and tweeter are located on NHT’s proprietary tweeter/midrange plate we call the "Pod".  The Pod contains a 3/4" dome tweeter and 2" dome midrange - both with anodized aluminum diaphragms with powerful, compact neodymium magnets. This Pod keeps the drivers in close proximity to each other (and with the lower midrange) which helps them act more like 1 wide range driver but with the low distortion benefits of a multi-driver system.  This combination of quality components, thoughtfully placed in acoustically ideal locations insure the Classic Four will deliver the goods from room to room to room.

The Cabinet: The Four is made with CNC milled and laminated ¾” and 1” dense fiberboard with extensive internal bracing and baffling for rigidity which helps reduce unwanted resonances. The front baffle itself is almost 1.5" thick! Along with the internal braces, the Four's cabinet has separate isolated chambers for the mid/high frequency drivers and subwoofer sections.  The the top front of the Four has variable radiuses flanking the Pod which help to randomize the upper frequency diffraction effects.  The cabinet's curved top, gentle edge radiuses and hand-rubbed, high-gloss piano-black finish lend a sense of timelessness to its visual aspect. Classic Fours are sold and packaged individually as left or right side speakers.  Included are 2-piece BMC formed stabilizer wings with threaded inserts for carpet spikes.  Rubber pads are also included for hardwood flooring.

Adding a Subwoofer: The Classic Four is a full range speaker making an additional subwoofer optional. Adding a NHT Classic series subwoofer to a pair of Classic Fours will however allow the Fours to have application flexibility.  For example, Fours can be configured solo, for full-range  stereo music  playback.  While adding a separate subwoofer(s) will improve system dynamics and lower total system distortion in a home theater system.  If you are considering a subwoofer, we recommend one or two Classic B-12d's as the perfect match.

Mixing and Matching: Building a home theater system?  All NHT speakers are designed and voiced with the same design goals so you have the freedom to use any of our Classic Series center channel speakers.  That said, we'll likely recommend the Classic ThreeC center channel speaker as the perfect match followed closely by the Classic TwoC if space issues prevent the use of the 3C. Rear speakers? A perfect match would be floor or wall mounted Classic Threes for surround and back channels.   However you can opt for the Absolute Zero's or Wall Speakers in Black or White because of their compact size.  Or use a combination of any of these suggestions.

The Company: Let’s not forget that you’re buying NHT speakers and that means all sorts of things. It means you care about getting the best speaker value for your hard earned money. It means and you care about quality craftsmanship and high-end performance. It means you’re ready to join our family of fanatics who love music, movies and the best gear that produces them. What an Amazing Pair of Speakers!

My first speakers (outside of a boombox) were NHT Zeros, then superzeros, and so on and so forth. My first Tower speakers were the NHT ST4's, and although a great speaker when I sold them and upgraded to the Fours, I was flabbergasted at the improvement. I thought it would be a a significant improvement, but I wasn't ready for how much of an improvement they really were! I then added an X2 and an A1 Amp and crossover and voila towers with powered subs! I had no need for another subwoofer and I saved some floorspace (at which my wife was pleased.) With the speakers bi-amped, I had more than enough bottom end for the 1812 Overture on DVD-Audio, not to mention Movies. Bottom Line - Best Tower Speaker out there for the Money, and better than a lot that cost quite a bit more!

I'€™ve used the Fours in several systems

I'€™ve been using, and selling NHT speakers for 11 years now, and you consistently make the finest products for the price anywhere in the market. I have used the Fours in several systems, and I find them to be NHT "€œsmooth"€ and "€œmellow" throughout the entire sound stage. The ability for them to be bi-wired also make for a great benefit, not only because the owners don'€™t have another "€œbox on the floor" for the subwoofer, I can mate the Fours with the A-1 amp, and give them incredible punch for movies but still laid back and natural on music.Way to go NHT! Keep up the good work.

Finally My Turn!

I have sold NHT speakers for several years now and have always been somewhat envious when my customers walk out the door with a set in their possesion...not anymore! I have the Fours connected to my 4308ci and the sound is out of this world! Thank you, Chris Byrne, for making a speaker that doesn't require a subwoofer in smaller rooms. These speakers are easily worth every dime that you will pay for them. Kudos, again, Chris Byrne!

FINALLY!

After years on the outskirts of audiophilia, I took the plunge and bought the Classic Fours. Powered by my mid '70's receiver, the Fours are absolutely stunning. Incredible detail and dynamic range, precision, articulation; you get it all with the Fours. This is an awesome truly high end product which produces truly world class sound. Congratulations NHT!

Love is Fickle

Back in my college and Navy days my buddies and I would head down to the local HIFI store and drool over the wares. I had dreams of Celestions, DCM Time Windows, and Magneplanars. Of course I had no money and no place to put them. Fast forward a few years and I scored a pair of Advents at a garage sale. They were good but long in the tooth. A few years later my career took off and I could afford luxuries like a bitchin’ two channel rig. In 1999 I headed to Audio FX in Sacramento, CA and met my first audio love – a pair of NHT 2.5i speakers in mahogany finish driven by an Acuras DIA-150. What a sweet sounding system. 12 years later I was still enjoying my first love until a mid-range driver was blown (middle daughter is prime suspect). I could not find a replacement driver so off to the NHT factory showroom I went. Of course I bought a pair of Classic Fours. I won’t review them as so many people and magazines have but I will tell you why they outperform the 2.5i. Wider sound stage with a larger sweet spot. Much, much deeper and tighter bass. Mid-range packs a must have punch even better. More clarity at the high frequencies. Additionally, the Fours will be the basis of an updated surround sound system that requires no subwoofer; I will bi-amplify them. Bottom line: Love is fickle and I now have a new love, my NHT Classic Fours! PS. I already converted a Bose Acoustimass® owner to the world of true high end audio. FYI, I have another NHT rig, a near field audio set up for my graphic arts workstation that includes a pair of SuperZero 2.0s mounted on solid wood block desktop stands, a Super 8 Powered Subwoofer, a HRT Music Streamer Pro 24/96 USB DAC, and a 100w per channel amp (except for wood stands, all uniquely available at NHT!). Best way to describe the system is that I have the best of two worlds: high end headphones meets high end speakers. Speakers are spaced four feet apart so the system has a very small sweet spot, but that bubble is sheer audio bliss.

Best all-around performer for the money?

I bi-amped the Classic 4s with a 500 watt per channel class D Rotel RB 1092 to the woofers and an RMB 1095 class A/B 200 watt per channel to the middle and upper frequencies. I have had these amps for several years but did not think the amp gains were similar. I got a hold of Rotel and found out that they are almost identical. I will just say that they have come alive. I have owned some very nice and expensive speakers from Infinity-when they were high end, Acoustat, Apogee Acoustics, Magnepan, Martin Logan, and Quad. I love the sound of ribbon tweeters, electrostatic midrange, and dynamic lower ends. I have switched back and forth from NHT to “more exotic” speakers through the years but I believe the NHT’s to be the best all around performer for the money. I currently have NHT Classic 4s, Classic 3s, and a 3c with 2 Classic 10 subwoofers. I need to try a pair of the new BD 12s. But anyway, thanks for your advice with the bi-amping. As a life long purchaser of NHTs-I cant count how many different models I have owned-keep up the good work!

Audio Excellence!

WOW, the clarity and presence of the sound of the 4Ts that I just received this past week is impressive. My wife and I have been re-listening to some CDs. (in 2 channel Pure Music mode) The sound widens out so well that both my wife and I had to check if the NHT 3C center was also on. (It wasn't but I had to get my ear within a few inches of the center to tell.) The clean power in my Onkyo TX-NR3007 really opened up the sound. One album that really seemed right there was my Verve Getz/Gilberto CD. This was originally taped at 30 IPS in the mid 60s if my memory is correct (double the normal speed). Also the Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Buddha Bar, and Oxygene albums (to name a few) really pop. The receiver's various music modes with the 3 front channels working all sound great, but straight up 2 channel stereo seems hard to beat. The natural imaging from the 4's opens up the sound the best on most CDs. I can't wait to hear a good movie's full surround sound with the 4s in front.Customer support by both phone and email has been prompt and helpful in choosing my NHT's.I wouldn't hesitate a second to recommend your speakers. It was money well spent.

Wow, best sounding speakers I've ever owned!

Having been a longtime NHT owner, I have to say that these are my favorite NHT speakers to date. The new midrange and tweeter design is superior to anything NHT has made in the past. The tonality and vocalization is excellent. These speakers are very accurate and when given the right amount of power and source material, they exude beautifuly smooth sound. These speakers have a built in sub and let me say that I'm quite the bass head and these subs come through and hit very smooth. I use a SVS PCi+31 and when I turned off the sub during one of my bass sessions to see how these towers handled the bass. Let me say, why do I even need a seperate sub? I'm not a big rap music fan but these speakers can handle the heavy bass line of modern music. I prefer more rock and movies and these speakers really come through nicely. The craziest thing about the Classic 4 is their imaging is so excellent that I find myself turning off the DSP and listening to them in stereo mode. The imaging is so nice you'd think the voice was coming from between the speakers! You'll also hear things you've probably never heard before from your older speakers. You can start picking out instruments! After having upgraded and having listned to many NHTs over the years, I find that this is one of their best speakers ever and the fact that the new midrange and tweeter combo plays so smooth and airy that really nothing out there can compare. Spend your money wisely and spend them on these speakers! You cannot go wrong! I enjoy listening to this setup so much that I find excuses to watch old movies again and listen to my favorite CDs on this system! Yes, they're that good!

Outstanding Speakers

I've owned a pair of the Classics 4's for over 5 years and the sound just keeps getting better and better! They are so good that I've upgraded the rest of my system over the years to include a Sony SACD/CD player, a Clearaudio turn table w/ Phonomena phono amp, NAD Digital Media Tuner and most recently a Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core digital signal processor. With each upgrade, the NHT's have had no problem communicating the music at an ever increasing level of performance. I have the Special Dark finish which complements my living room furnishings so well that my wife doesn't mind having them proudly diplayed. Highly recommended!
